let’s talk language: a workshop for yoga teachers
In June 2024, I hosted a virtual workshop called Let’s Talk Language for yoga teachers.
Many Yoga Teacher Trainings (YTTs) are missing what I consider to be a crucial support for new teachers: discussion on how to develop a broad vocabulary, true to their style and voice, that is grounded in ancient yoga philosophy. I created Let’s Talk Language to fill this gap.
Topics included how to:
Plan classes that reflect the ancient teachings of sankalpa (intention), svadhyaya (self-study), and ahimsa (non-harming)
Offer accessible and invitational prompts for movement in your classes
Build a teaching lexicon with strong verbs and nouns
Think critically about how to create safer spaces that challenge ableism and competition
Below is a sample from the 40-page slide deck.
I have since expanded this workshop and now teach it as a part of the Essential Yoga Teacher Training, along with various other teachings about ethics in modern yoga. If you’re looking for a YTT in Waterloo Region, check us out!
